Emails have been here for decades. It is like the Great Grand Parent of communication tools. It is old, but it is still in its prime. Even after the onslaught of tools like Chats, Slack and Zoom email continues to be the rule the Country of Communication. It continues to be THE official form of communication for Organizations. In a Remote Work World that experienced Zoom fatigue people preferred emails, as it is asynchronous by design. In its current form, it is a great & almost perfect communication tool - almost.
What is the problem?
Too many emails - that's the problem. Email is a largely text based communication tool. When you have 30 unread mails in the morning, that's quite a task to go through every single one of them one-by-one. There is no better way to do that as well. While we cannot reduce the number of mails, I think we can definitely improve the way we consume the mails.
Do I have a Solution?
I'm working on it. My current side project [glance.email] aims to improve the consumption of emails. I'm from Business Intelligence background where we present complex with easy to use Charts. Though emails as such are not complex, the sheer number and variety of it makes me think it deserves a Dashboard layer on top of it - something like this...
Apart from a Charts in the Dashboards, we also provide a summary of your emails so that you can get a gist of the contents before diving deep into a long email. In the next phase, we have more plans like adding voice to the summary. You can hear a summary of your emails when you wake up in the morning (that too in respective sender's voice). I'll write a separate blog for this feature later.
Where am I now?
The MVP is in progress. I plan to release glance as a layer on top of Gmail and Outlook to start with. We are exploring options whether it should be a Gmail Add-on and / or an stand-alone app. But the core idea of having the Dashboard layer is common and that what we are working on now. Being a side project with, it is going on a slower than the wished pace. Currently we are here :-)
I'll keep this space updated as frequently as possible. Do let us know your thoughts on this idea
